A co-production with Amina Khayyam Dance Company

YERMA

A Kathak interpretation of the classic play by Federico Garcia Lorca.

The anguishing story of Yerma who suffers heart breaking social torment of a childless marriage, forcing her to commit a horrific and irrevocable act is told by Amina Khayyam using Kathak vocabulary.

Lorca’s savage yet poetical lyrical play set in rural patriarchal and religiously repressive Spain is interpreted in a movement that is entrenched in a similar world but one that has to engage with the modern.

THE MAKING OF KARAN

The Making of Karna is a journey by Abhay Shankar Mishra to explore the lesser known hero Karna, from the grand epic Mahabharata.

Karna was unaccepted for being from a low caste lineage despite his heroics and commitment. Abhay makes parallels of Karna’s mistreatment to the modern forms of discrimination, especially against the newly arrived communities.

The Making of Karna was showcased as part of the UKGharana season in February 2011.

SPRING / SUMMER  2011

The Maharajah & The Kohinoor

Created by zeroSeefr

Written by Hardial S. Rai

Directed by Harmage S. Kalirai

A TIE piece for young audiences (years 7 +)

Charting one of the most illustrious episodes in British history The Maharajah and the Kohinoor follows the story of Duleep Singh, Maharajah of Lahore and King of the Sikh Empire, who was deposed by the British at the age of eleven and sent to England. Not only was he separated from his mother, but also from his most prized possession - The Kohinoor, the world’s largest diamond, taken away from him to be included in the Crown Jewels.

On arriving at the shores of England Duleep immediately became a court favourite of Queen Victoria. Encouraged by Her Majesty, the ex-Maharajah established solid relationships with the Royal family over the years. However, injustices and insincere intentions from the British establishment eventually drove him into the arms of exploitative meddlers who offered allegiance but left him isolated. He died penniless and alone in 1893.

A co-production with The Drum.
Originally commissioned by the Anglo Sikh Heritage Trail
